MODULAR ARCHITECTURE FOR A LEADING RENEWABLE ENERGY COMPANY

SITUATION

Increasing demand on cost reduction and flexibility

The client, a leading global manufacturer within the renewable energy sector, had a strong track record of successful products launches. However, intensified competition from traditional and new competitors, as well as an increasing demand for product variety, brings new challenges to the table. The client was therefore looking for support on how to build a more cost efficient and flexible future product offer, reducing COGS and complexity costs in the supply chain and in product development.

APPROACH

From individual product decisions to product range planning

Together with the client Brick Strategy developed a structured process for modularization and complexity management. The approach focused on front-loading with market intelligence and product roadmap planning to realize synergies between the product families in the coming releases. Also, having a total value chain cost perspective was key in the approach. Brick strategy therefore supported the client with numerous concept and scenario evaluations to secure fact based decision making based on total cost. The change program was executed with a hands-on approach in parallel with major new product development initiatives providing for cross-functional cooperation and knowledge transfer to the organization.

RESULTS

Reduced total value chain cost and improved flexibility

The modularization and complexity management program helped the client in the realization of the following improvements:

  • Reduced total value chain complexity cost over the product range
  • Reduced product development cost and time
  • Shorter time to market for future product releases
  • Reduced COGS through economies of scale in components usage
  • Improved configurability and product customization
  • Improved cross-functional cooperation and decision making
