NEW GENERATION OF TRUCKS AND BUSES FOR THE ASIAN MARKET

SITUATION

Changing market needs and stricter emission legislation called for actions

The client, an Asian based automotive manufacturer of heavy trucks and buses was facing a significantly stricter emission legislation which required a complete re-vamp of the vehicle powertrains. Also, consumers shopping online 24/7 and a more flexible work force market  required higher vehicle up-time and lower operational costs. Going forward, the domestic market was saturated, hence export of vehicles was necessary for continuous growth by providing solutions in a shorter time and at lower product cost to win the deals. The client was therefore looking for support on how to build an optimized modular vehicle architecture with flexibility to meet both future customer needs and regulatory requirements at a lower cost, both for domestic and foreign markets.

APPROACH

From singular products to fully configurable products with lower costs

The project focused on understanding and agreement on short- and long-term market needs and technology development to enable a proactive product range planning to realize synergies between segments within the truck product range as well across the large bus families. Having a cross-functional perspective was key in the approach. Brick Strategy supported the client in running multi-functional workshops and meetings to secure alignment on market needs, product requirements and supply-chain requirementsThe product program was executed with a hands-on approach in parallel with major new product development initiatives which provided efficient cross-functional cooperation and quick knowledge transfer to the organization.

RESULTS

Higher efficiency in product development and improved flexibility

The project focus is to implement new functionality, shorten the Time to Market, lower the product cost and reduce the number of components. The project started in 2016 and will be running for a few years, where Brick Strategy plays an integral part of the team to secure project progress and product launch on time.

Brick Strategy has supported the client in realizing the following:

  • Creation of the vehicle architecture and module specification for detailed design, including the interfaces

  • Providing best-practice insight from global OEM:s to align on ambitions and goals

  • Set the requirements for improvements in the PLM-systems and processes

  • Ensuring that the final project goals are reachable and on the right track through defined KPI:s
